ESSENTIAL LIFTS AT HILLINGDON HOSPITAL
 The existing Hillingdon Hospital was
built in the 1930’s on the site originally occupied by a workhouse infirmary that dates back to 1838. Today, the existing hospital and its wings, originating from the late 50’s early 60’s, require some essential modernisation work to be undertaken to bring four of the hospital’s lifts up to the standards required by the NHS Foundation Trust.
Working with the Foundation’s chosen lift contractor Jackson Lifts, Lester Controls
helped with controller specification to ensure easy configuration with the duplex pair of 10-stop lifts serving the hospital’s tower block. The modernisation involved the installation of new ZIEHL-ABEGG permanent magnetic drives, matched to ZIEHL-ABEGG inverters.
The hospital and consultants required the ALMEGA II controllers to be programmed to operate Automatic Rescue Devices (ARD), have an interface with the hospital’s security swipe card
system and provide ECO energy saving with sequential shutdown of car lighting and indicators when the lifts are not in use.
In emergency call situations, e.g. “CODE BLUE”, all lift calls are overridden to serve the emergency call.
The other two modernisations related to lift 8, a 3-stop lift, and lift 9, a 4-stop lift, and follows the same works programme as that of the tower block lifts.
The modernisation work was carried out to EN81 standards, under strict COVID-19 social distancing requirements, with great care being taken by all parties working on the project to ensure surfaces were sanitised after they had been worked on.
   ALMEGA II & BMS
Evermore companies want to connect building services equipment to a Building Management System, BMS. A BMS provides real-time control, allowing building operators to monitor building electrical and mechanical services including lifts, escalators and moving walks. For those customers who have an ALMEGA II controller fitted with a Lester Controls board, they are able to do exactly that.
The internet board interface is preconfigured with MODBUS protocols that enable a link via TCP / IP ethernet to the buildings BMS system. The system via the BMS also allows the customer to choose their own graphical display choice should they wish. The MODBUS protocol pre-configuration is standard with all Lester Controls’ latest internet boards, so a little treat from Lester Controls.
Please see our article on pages 14-15 about our HVAC division’s involvement in Energy Management and Air Quality control which both link to Building Management Systems.
